Introduction to Explorers
'To anyone who hasn’t tried Scouting before, I’d say come on up and have a go! I think that most people don’t really know that Scouting is about activities, friendship and meeting people from other countries. I’ve been in the Movement since I was a Beaver and I still love it!'
Explorers are the fourth section of the Scouting movement. Right from the time of Baden-Powell, there have been arrangements for young people who wanted to continue after their time in the Scout Section, and in 1967, Venture Scouts were formed from the existing Senior Scout and Rover Scout Sections.
During the late 1990s we decided that, to meet the changing needs of young people, there should be two sections for the over-14s: Explorer Scouts for 14 to 18-year-olds, and the Scout Network for 18 to 25s.
Merlin ESU Report – April 2009 to March 2010
We have taken part in all District competitions – Bowling competition, Explorer decathlon, swimming gala (which we won!), Jack Beeson memorial trophy and hosted the Christmas Party.
Stayed in camping barns in Keswick at Easter (invited Aquilifer ESU to join us), putting hiking and cooking skills into practice. Went to Gilwell 24 in July for 24 hours of non-stop activities and witnessed the handover to the new Chief Scout, Bear Grylls. Practised scouting skills and tree-felling at Boarfold campsite in October.
Trips out have included watching the Kawahadi Indians, The Crocky trail, swimming, ice-skating, a night hike to Middlewood, wide games (including water pistols!) at Middlewood and an incident bike ride.
‘Good deeds’ we have done include helping at the Spring clean, stripping the HQ for painting, building an altar fire, taking part on Red Nose Day’s ‘Do Something Funny For Money’ and raising money for Children In Need.
Other meetings have included a photo challenge, a quiz around Urmston, rifle shooting, building bivvies, backwoods cooking, fire lighting, map reading, a Wii night, a Scottish night and Christmas crafts night.
Two Explorer Scouts are on the Young Leaders training course and one attended the Jamboree selection events.
